Is there a page limit for a good resume?
Unless you are a published author with lists of articles or an inventor with dozens of patents, a resume’s length is directly dependent upon your years participating in the business community. If you are directly out of school with only summer internships to speak of, then you need to limit your work to one page. A mid-to-senior level executive with 10+ years’ experience will need to write a document between one and two pages.
How far back should my resume go?
This is a judgment call. Typically, your resume should go back no more than 15 years. The business landscape changes dramatically on a yearly basis, so anything too far back may no longer be relevant. However, if you would like to return to a career or industry that you had worked in 15+ years ago, then it would be relevant to list it on your resume. A candidate should concentrate on those skills in his or her Profile section and simply list the job entry.
What is the best prep for an interview?
To prepare for an interview, you, of course, need a neat and professional appearance. Bring clean copies of your resume, references, and any other type of supporting material. Arrive early. (If you're early, then you're on time ... if you're on time, then you're late.)
However, there are two areas that you need to concentrate on before your big day:
(1) Know your own resume. Often, a candidate may be nervous, may have revised his or her resume several times, or may have had a professional write it and truly forgot what it contained. For every statement or bullet on your document, be prepared to back it up with an explanation. Practice this so that it flows naturally and has a conversational tone.
(2) Google your interviewer, the company, and its competitors. Find out as much information as possible about your potential employment situation. Don’t forget to search LinkedIn, Facebook, blogs, and other networking sites. You need to know a Company’s current products and services. Have any questions about what you’ve discovered? Good. Write it down and save it for your interview.
